Anatomy of a Christmas Photo

As any of you with toddlers know, it is nearly impossible to take a decent photo. Maddux may be sitting perfectly still, doing the sweetest, most angelic little thing, but the laws of parenthood state that the moment a camera is taken out and focused on him, he turns into the Tasmanian Devil.

So, as I am a bit of a slave to tradition, I just had to attempt to take our yearly family Christmas photo. I'm sad to say that these are not all entirely Maddux's fault.

Here are the results:

                                               Checking the lighting......

And the tripod positioning. Oh hello there, Jackson Dog.

This could take awhile........

At least he's looking at the camera.

Oops! There goes my top. Thanks Nate!

Almost there.....

As good as it's going to get.

Easy DIY Child's Silhouette

I have always loved old-fashioned silhouettes of people. In fact, my original logo for my boutique, Lucy & Lloyd featured a man and woman's silhouette.

After Maddux was born, I considered hiring someone to do his silhouette, but I had a hard time finding an artist who was within my price range. I wondered if it was something I could pull off on my own, and after doing a little research, I found this great tutorial. Still, I couldn't seem to find the time to sit down and actually create something. With a one year old, it felt a bit overwhelming.

Then, my super crafty sister-in-law Megan posted this on her blog, and I was sold. Last week, I finally sat down and created my silhouette, and I absolutely love it!

Here is what I did:

1. First, you will need black acrylic paint. I bought two, unsure of how much I would actually need, but I only ended up using about half of one bottle.
I used a foam paintbrush, but I'm sure any kind would work.

2. I found a profile picture I had taken of Maddux and sent it to Walgreens to be printed off on photo paper. I chose 8 x 10.

3. I used some very fine manicure scissors to cut out his silhouette. I was extra careful to preserve as much detail as possible, in particular his curls and eyelashes.

4. I then started the process of painting the cut out silhouette, using long, even strokes.

5. I let each layer dry before starting the next. I wanted it extra black and thick, so I ended up painting 4 layers.

6. After the silhouette was completely dry, I mounted it to a piece of scrapbook paper that I liked, using double-sided scrapbook tape. The frame is a record size frame that Nate had that I repurposed. It is actually a little too big, so I may go back in and make a black, scalloped border. I'm also thinking about adding his name to the bottom.

I really love how this turned out! It was super easy, and we now have a cute piece of handmade art that captures Maddux's sweet one-year-old profile.

Musician's Corner

A few weeks ago our band, The Carmonas had the privilege of playing for a great audience in Nashville's Centennial Park for Musician's Corner. Also on the bill that day were The Blind Boys of Alabama, Jeremy Lister and Karen Elson. Needless to say, we felt pretty honored to be in the company of such great musicians.

Last week, Nate was out of town for a bachelor party, so Maddux and I decided to head down to the park to listen to some music.

I have never seen a kid react to music the way that Maddux does. He literally jumps with joy! As a musician, it seriously makes my heart leap.

We put on his little ear protectors and he was ready to rock! Nate found this picture that awesome photographer Jon Karr snapped. Cute!

I also love this one from our show!

You can see more pictures and get more information about upcoming shows at the Musician's Corner Facebook page.

Maddux's 2nd Birthday

This whole "time flies" thing is becoming more and more evident as the days go by. I still think of Maddux as a baby, but if his growing vocabulary and big boy mannerisms are any indication, he is definitely not one anymore!

To help reinforce this fact, we decided to throw him a "real" birthday party this year, as opposed to last year's celebration. He is obsessed with trains, or "choo choo's" so we really had no choice in the matter.

We had the party at a local park (with a real train!). Since it was Labor Day weekend, we got there fairly early to ensure a picnic shelter, strung up balloons and got everything set up. For food, we brought in an old-fashioned hot dog cart (like this one) and let everyone help themselves.

We kept it a family party, so it was his Nashville cousins, some aunts and uncles and my mom. It was so sweet watching how excited he was, running around with his cousins, popping balloons and spreading icing all over himself (and anyone within his reach)!

1. Cupcake toppers I designed on my computer then printed and cut out. 2. Paper popcorn holders from Michael's. I couldn't find them on their website, but here are some similar ones. 3. I found this cute train conductor hat at the thrift store, but I found these with a little web search. His shirt is from Etsy. 4. I found this life-sized Thomas the Train on Craigslist. You can also buy it new here. Needless to say, it was pretty much the hit of the party. 5. We did a "help yourself" gift bag of Skittles, Fruit snacks and wooden train whistles, bought on Ebay.

Latest Find: 3.1 Phillip Lim, Thread Social & Esley

Lately when I've gone shopping, I have a ticking time bomb in the form of a 21 month old stuck in a stroller. Usually he is pretty good, especially if he has a truck in his hands, but I just never know when he is going to reach his limit.

So in an attempt to ward off a stare-inducing meltdown, I've gotten pretty good at flying through the aisles, grabbing what I need or what catches my eye. I'm sure I'm missing some pretty great stuff, but this method nonetheless worked on a recent thrifting outing here in Nashville.

I managed to pick up three gorgeous designer dresses. The first is a dark blue 3.1 Phillip Lim cocktail dress. Ruffly and decadent, it would be perfect for a summer party or a fancy date night. Alas, it is too big for me, so I'm pretty certain it will wind up on my Ebay store in the near future. These dresses can retail for $600 and more, so someone is sure to get a steal.

 The back ruching is beautiful!

The next dress I found is a pretty rockin' Esley dress. This was brand new with the tags still attached, and originally retailed for almost $100. Not super pricey, but I got a great deal anyways. I'm thinking about saving this for a performance. It has a fun swirly skirt that would be perfect for dancing.

I think my favorite may be this Thread Social dress. I have nothing else in this color, so I thought it would be a nice stand out piece. I love that it can be dressed up with heels and jewelry, or worn a bit more casually. Maybe not to the playground, but definitely for dinner with the girls on a warm night.
Thread Social dresses tend to retail in the $300 to $700 range (with some topping $1000!), so I definitely got a bargain.

Until next time, Happy Shopping!

Fun In Nashville: Porter Flea

When people think of Nashville, probably the first thing that comes to mind is country music. This, of course, is not a bad thing. Many, many people and businesses make their living from that kind of music. But Nashville is so much more than that.

There is a massive, creative community here, and events like the Porter Flea are helping to spread the word that we have some pretty amazingly talented people in this town.

I can't wait until Saturday! Will I see you there?

Some of the cool vendors who will be there:

I'm loving this iPhone skin. Or this one . I can't decide.

Hands off people. This dress is going home with me!

Ah, here we go. Linocut cowboy boot greeting card . YeeHaw!

Wow .

Bicycle Print . So perfect.

Organic pillows ? You read my mind.

Gorgeous wood pendants . Would look pretty with the dress above, no?

There are so many more incredible vendors. Too many to include on this blog. So come in person to check them out!
